Homemade Ketchup

Homemade Ketchup

So here is one of my pet peeves: ketchup!!!  I think that it’s really just a lot of sugar with a little tomato taste and kids really like to put that stuff on everything way too much.  I try to avoid it as much as I possibly can with two 5 year olds in the house, and I never pull it out until they have at least eaten a few bites without and I NEVER mention it but I still have some in the house regretfully.  But since my garden has been giving me sooo many tomatoes lately, I decided to make my own version of it, which surprisingly came very close to it and the best part about it, is that the kids devoured it and as a bonus, only a little chopping is required.  So make a big batch of it and have it ready for the week ahead.

Homemade KetchupStart by dicing your tomatoes and mincing the celery and onion as small as you can possible make it. Then simply toss all the ingredients together and let it sit over a sieve for at least 30 minutes to one hour so that the excess tomato juice drains.  Take those juices and pour into a small pan and turn the heat on to medium/high and let simmer until it reduces by 2/3.  IT will only take a few minutes.  You want to be left with thick juices that resembles a syrup and you will hear and see that the bubbles are bigger once it becomes syrupy.  Let cool and toss into your veggies.  Adjust salt and pepper if needed and serve! Voilà! It is as simple as that and all made from ingredients that you can actually pronounce! Isn’t that what you want your kids to actually be eating anyways?

Bon appétit!! 🙂

  • 3 to 4 ripe tomatoes
  • 1 celery branch
  • 1/2 of a small onion
  • 1 tbsp of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of fresh ground black pepper
